Hello! I'm proud to introduce myself as a Grade 6 student at Clarion School and currently serve as the Eco Heroes President. My passion for sustainability has grown through my active involvement in various school initiatives aimed at making our campus and community more eco-friendly. From participating in waste reduction campaigns to promoting energy conservation, I've learned the importance of small, everyday actions in creating a big impact on the environment. Hi, my name is Mariam, and I am delighted to share a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with the Clarion and Roots & Shoots Community.

The Roots & Shoots Awards ceremony at Expo City was an amazing and innovative event, but the most exciting part was meeting the smart, wise, and kind Dr Jane Goodall herself.

Growing Sunflowers

In Clarion Diggers we decided to have a sunflower competition to see which one would grow the tallest.
In October we all planted a sunflower seed in a small pot. We wrote our names on our pot.
We watered the plant. Unfortunately, some of them died over the Winter holidays because they weren’t watered. I took mine home and found a good place for it.

Amending the Soil in our Planter Boxes

During my CCI (co-curricular activity) this autumn I amended the soil in the planter boxes in the Clarion community garden with Ms. Nina and my classmates because we wanted our plants to be healthy.
We learned that when you amend old soil you add worm poo, cow poo, compost and organic fertilizers to make the soil richer. Amending the soil is important when growing food because it gives the plants extra nutrients, so the plants are healthier, and that makes the food they produce healthier for people to eat.

Composting Chaos and Joy

Isn’t composting meant to be serious (and smelly) business? Something best avoided and left to quirky garden people? This week, while filling the school tumbler, the Clarion Diggers proved that composting can be anything but these things.
(Well ok, perhaps a bit smelly.)
From the joy of piling up dried leaves into buckets and discovering new techniques for pouring them into the tumbler, to the challenge of balancing mounds of squishy fermented food waste on the end of a shovel, preparing our latest batch of compost was a fun-filled way to spend an afternoon.
